Information to help your NZ Study Visa Application
Applying for an New Zealand Study Visa can be a minefield of forms, requirements and permissions. This page contains information and tips to help make your application journey easier.
Below is a guide of what evidence you will need to provide to apply for a New Zealand student visa. The criteria may change based on your nationality on your passport and the location where you apply.

Criteria that you need to provide
Identity
- You must provide proof of your identity
Health
- You must be in good health
Character
- You must be of good character
Genuine intentions
- You must genuinely intend to meet the conditions of your visa
Funds
- You must have enough money to live on while you’re in New Zealand
Onward travel
- You must have a ticket to leave New Zealand or be sponsored for the cost of your onward travel
Permission to work
- If you're under 18 you must have written permission to work
Once you are enrolled
PIHMS will provide you with documentation to present Immigration New Zealand as evidence for the following criteria:
Offer of place
- You must have an offer of place from PIHMS
Tuition fees
- You must have enough money to pay your tuition fees.
Once you have paid your fees to PIHMS we will provide you with a letter and receipt showing fees are paid, to provide to immigration New Zealand as evidence.
Alternatively, you will need to provide evidence you’ve applied for a home country government loan that you will need to provide along with a letter from PIHMS that you’re enrolling in a bachelor degree programme or higher at PIHMS.
Medical and travel insurance
- You must have full medical and travel insurance at all times for the length of your stay.
PIHMS will arrange an insurance policy for you.
Full-time vacation work rights
You must provide information about your holidays and your course
- PIHMS will provide you the vacation scheduled to provide as evidence
- PIHMS will also provide you with an offer letter that shows that your course value is 120 credits.
Practical experience (optional)
If you are taking a course at PIHMS that includes a Paid Industry Placement you will need special work rights to work full time during your course. PIHMS will provide you with the required documentation to provide as evidence to use in your application for your student visa.
PIHMS will provide you with an offer letter and payment receipt that you will be required to provide to Immigration New Zealand.
Alternatively, you can apply for work rights once you are in New Zealand studying at PIHMS. PIHMS can apply for your work rights for your industry placement. This is $250 per application.
