‘Flatting’ is when you rent a house or apartment. You can flat on your own or with others and flats are usually unfurnished. You may have your own room or share with others.
Rent is usually paid per room with all other expenses (food, power, telephone, internet) divided, and cooking and cleaning shared.

Electricity and accessories

PIHMS Wi-Fi is quality and similar to other high-speed connections same as you get anywhere in New Zealand. The speed is high speed however is not ultra high speed which is available in some overseas countries.

Fees free is targeted at first-time learners. If you meet the Fees free critera you will be able to get one year of free study at PIHMS funded through Fees Free (Note, this only includes the tuition fees). See if you are eligible at Fees free website.
General safety and wellbeing
Student Safety on Roads
New Zealand road system and conditions are unique, and students need to be aware of the risks on the roads in New Zealand.

It is highly recommended that students have at least third-party vehicle insurance if they drive a vehicle.
Keeping safe in the water
New Zealand has many beaches, lakes and rivers for you to discover and enjoy, to keep safe in and around the water be sure to vist Water Safety New Zealand.
Security
For student safety we use CCTV in the accommodation blocks.
CCTV cameras will:
- be operational 24 hours per day every day;
- be movement activated and include infrared technology;
- monitor access to, and movements of, people in public areas (corridors, lounge, entertainment areas);
- be positioned at entry points and fire doors.
Cameras will be securely installed and maintained to prevent unauthorised access, use, modification and disclosure. Signs will be displayed near CCTV cameras to notify people that cameras are in operation. Footage will be stored on dedicated computers on campus for a period of 30 days and access will be password protected. Footage will only be reviewed in the event of an incident requiring investigation, and exported onto a USB and downloaded and securely filed by the SSC.
Footage will be released on USB to government agencies (such as NZ Police, Department of Justice, Ministry of Education, NZQA, Inland Revenue and the Accident Compensation Corporation) when required by law.
Privacy
The Privacy Act came into force on 1 July 1993 with the stated aim of protecting the privacy of natural persons. It requires PIHMS to collect, hold, handle, use and disclose personal information in accordance with the twelve information privacy principles in the Privacy Act.
PIHMS collects and stores information to:
- manage the business of PIHMS (including internal reporting and administrative processes)
- comply with the requirements of the Education Act 1989 and other legislation relating to maintenance of records
- supply information to government agencies and other organisations as set out below
Supply of information to government agencies and other organisations. PIHMS supplies data collected to government agencies, including:
- the Ministry of Education
- the New Zealand Qualifications Authority
- the Tertiary Education Commission
- the Ministry of Social Development (in relation to student loans and allowances) and Inland Revenue (student loans)
- Immigration New Zealand and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (for those who are not New Zealand citizens or permanent residents)
- agencies who support particular students through scholarships, payment of fees or other awards (if you are a recipient of one of these awards).
Those agencies use the data collected from tertiary education organisations to:
- administer the tertiary education system, including allocating funding
- develop policy advice for government
- conduct statistical analysis and research
The government agencies above may supply data collected to Statistics New Zealand for the purposes of integrating data with data collected by other government agencies, subject to the provisions of the Statistics Act 1975. Integrated data is used for the production of official statistics, to inform policy advice to government and for research purposes. In handling data supplied by you, the government agencies are required to comply with the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993. When required by law, PIHMS releases information to government agencies such as the New Zealand Police, Department of Justice, Ministry of Social Development, and the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Information collected may be supplied to other educational organisations for the purpose of verifying academic records.
