Introducing James Cunningham, who went from PIHMS Graduate to Business Development Manager for Novotel, New Plymouth.
My time at PIHMS
My time at PIHMS was incredible; I made some wonderful friends and lots of valuable industry connections along the way. The mix of practical and theoretical learning helped develop my skill set for a career in hotels. The two industry placements which you complete during your studies provide you with two job references to assist in finding a job quickly post-studies. You can even receive a post-study job offer during your industry placements, which helps set you up post-studies. PIHMS also has a great reputation for producing great hoteliers, so this is often looked at favourably over other applicants.
My life after PIHMS
I have worked in hotels for over 10 years now and have worked my way up from a bartender into a variety of different positions over the years. Having worked in a boutique environment for many years, I have wanted to challenge myself with a larger property. Day-to-day consists of a range of different areas which include sales activity, client relationship management, business growth initiatives, partnership management, and networking and events, to name a few.
I am very passionate about building relationships, driving growth, creating memorable guest experiences, and being able to contribute to the success of the hotel. Therefore, my favourite part of my job are the daily interactions with guests, travel bookers, and the staff that I work with.
This industry surprised me due to the incredible career pathways that present themselves throughout your professional development. I have been fortunate to have worked with some incredible hotel GMs who are complete open books around sharing knowledge, experiences, and mentorship.
My 5-year goal
My 5-year goal is to become a General Manager of my own hotel.
